Slope and Unit Rate Calculator
Compare slope and unit rate, and see when they describe the same constant relationship.
Slope measures steepness; unit rate measures per-one-unit value
Enter two points to compare slope and unit rate.
How to use this calculator
Enter two points on a line. The calculator finds the slope (rise/run) and the unit rate, showing when they match.
What this means in math class
In 7th and 8th grade, students learn that slope and unit rate are the same when the line passes through the origin. This tool makes the connection visual.
Worked examples
Example 1: Line through origin
Points: (0,0) and (4,12)
- Step 1:Slope = (12-0) ÷ (4-0) = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
- Step 2:Unit rate = y ÷ x = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
- Step 3:They match: slope = unit rate
Example 2: Line not through origin
Points: (0,2) and (4,14)
- Step 1:Slope = (14-2) ÷ (4-0) = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
- Step 2:Unit rate check: 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5
- Step 3:They differ: slope ≠ unit rate
Frequently asked questions
Are slope and unit rate always the same?
Only when the line passes through the origin. Then both equal k.
What does it mean if slope ≠ unit rate?
The relationship is not proportional. There's an added constant.
