Constant of Proportionality Explained for Students

Learn what the constant of proportionality (k) means and how to find it from tables, graphs, equations, and word problems with clear examples.

If a car travels 60 miles in 1 hour, 120 miles in 2 hours, and 180 miles in 3 hours, something stays the same the whole time: the number 60. That number — the constant rate — is the constant of proportionality.

What Is the Constant of Proportionality?

The constant of proportionality (kk) is the fixed number that relates two quantities in a proportional relationship. Every proportional relationship has exactly one kk.

The equation is:

y=kxy = kx

  • yy depends on xx
  • kk is the constant multiplier
  • xx is the independent variable

If you know kk, you can predict any yy from any xx.

How to Find kk

There are four common ways to find the constant of proportionality.

1. From a Table

Divide yy by xx for any row. The result is kk.

| xx | yy | | :-: | :-: | | 3 | 15 | | 7 | 35 | | 10 | 50 |

k=153=5,357=5,5010=5k = \frac{15}{3} = 5, \quad \frac{35}{7} = 5, \quad \frac{50}{10} = 5

k=5k = 5

2. From a Graph

Pick any point on the line where x0x \neq 0. Divide the yy-coordinate by the xx-coordinate.

If a line passes through (4,12)(4, 12):

k=124=3k = \frac{12}{4} = 3

The line is y=3xy = 3x.

3. From an Equation

If the equation is in y=kxy = kx form, kk is the coefficient of xx.

  • y=7xy = 7xk=7k = 7
  • y=25xy = \frac{2}{5}xk=25k = \frac{2}{5}
  • y=0.25xy = 0.25xk=0.25k = 0.25

4. From a Word Problem

Identify the two quantities and divide the dependent quantity by the independent quantity.

A pool fills at 8 gallons per minute.

k=8 gallons per minutek = 8 \text{ gallons per minute}

The equation is y=8xy = 8x, where yy is gallons and xx is minutes.

What kk Means in Real Life

kk always has a unit. It describes how much yy changes per 1 unit of xx.

| Situation | kk | What it means | |---|---|---| | Earning $15/hour | 15 | You earn $15 per hour worked | | 3 cups of flour per batch | 3 | Each batch needs 3 cups | | Reading 2 pages per minute | 2 | Each minute you read 2 pages | | $0.25 per ounce | 0.25 | Each ounce costs 25 cents |

kk converts "how many units of xx" into "how many units of yy."

Common Mistakes

Dividing xx by yy instead of yy by xx. Check your units. If yy is dollars and xx is hours, kk should be dollars per hour — so divide dollars by hours.

Forgetting kk can be a fraction. k=23k = \frac{2}{3} is perfectly valid. Not every constant is a whole number.

Assuming kk is always positive. A negative kk means yy decreases as xx increases. The relationship is still proportional.

FAQ

What is the constant of proportionality called in geometry? In geometry, kk is often called the scale factor when comparing similar figures.

Is the constant of proportionality the same as slope? Yes, when the line passes through the origin. In a proportional relationship y=kxy = kx, kk is both the constant of proportionality and the slope.

Can kk be zero? Technically yes: y=0x=0y = 0x = 0. But this is a trivial case that rarely appears in 7th-grade problems.

How do you find kk in a graph with a curved line? You can't. Curved lines don't represent proportional relationships, so they don't have a single constant of proportionality.

What if kk changes after the first row? Then the table doesn't represent a proportional relationship. The constant must be the same for every pair.
